Maxine "Max" J. Steevens


 

Maxine "Max" J. Steevens, age 78, formerly of Dorchester, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Colonial Center in Colby under the tender of care of hospice. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester. Pastor Patti Steevens will officiate. Family and friends are welcome from 9:30 AM until time of services on Friday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Dorchester is entrusted with the arrangements.

 

Max was born on May 25, 1935 in Greenwood, the daughter of John and Mayme (Haupt) Kelty. She graduated from Loyal High School in 1953. Max was united in marriage to Harvey "Bucky" Steevens on June 15, 1959 in Waukegan, IL. He preceded her in death in 1990.

 

Max enjoyed cooking, gardening, socializing and helping others.

 

Max is survived by her three children: Linda (Mike) Hraby of Medford, Lorin (Kim) Steevens of Oshkosh and Lisa (Tom) Waldhart of Greenwood; eight grandchildren: Craig, Justin, Ryan, Ashley, Sam, Beth, Jake and Jenna; eight great-grandchildren: Zach, Alicia, Logan, Tanner, Rylee, Laney, Ava and Owen. She is further survived by her sister, Carol Tapia, FL and a sister-in-law, Lucille Pitzke of Medford.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mayme; her husband Bucky, her son, Lonny; a sister, Ruth Ann Kelty; two brothers-in-law, Marvin and Jerome Steevens and a sister-in-law, Gerry Firke.

PRINCIPAL EVENTS IN LIFE: From 1941 – 1944 she taught high school in Okabena, MN. She was employed by Boeing in Seattle, WA for a period of time. At the end of WW II she worked for the State of Washington and then transferred to Montana doing educational rehab at Fort Harrison Hospital in Helena. Moved to the Town of Medford in 1950 and worked as a bookkeeper for D & D Service in Medford from 1972 – 1982. In 1999 she moved to Marshfield. She enjoyed reading, elephants, Brewers baseball & watching Jeopardy.

William Paul Scharrschmidt


 

William Paul Scharrschmidt, age 92 of Neenah, formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully early Monday, April 28, 2014 at his home. He was born June 27, 1921 in the Town of Hammel, WI to the late Ewald and Jennie (Frey) Scharrschmidt. On February 22, 1946 he married Ursula Russell and the two were blessed with four children.

 

Bill attended Cleveland School in the Town of Hammel and graduated from Medford High School. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied Civil Engineering. He also enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in July 1942 as a Bombardier where he received 2nd Lt. Commission in 1943. He flew in 30 missions, 18 of them as lead-Bombardier on a B-24 as a part of 8th Air Force, 2nd Air Division, 467th Bomb Group European Theater of Operations, where he earned a ribbon with five battle stars, an Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, a Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart for wounds received over Magdeburg, Germany on mission 8-16-44. He returned to inactive status as a 1st Lt. in November of 1945. Thereafter, he joined the Wisconsin National Guard, 32nd Division from 1949 through 1954 where he served as Captain of Intelligence Section (S-2) in Engineering Battalion.

 

After his service to our country, Bill worked as a Treasurer at Time Federal Savings Bank where he was eventually elected to many other positions, such as Board of Directors, Vice-President and Secretary, and even President and Chairman of the Board. He retired on January 1, 1987 after 40 years.

 

Bill was extremely active in his community. He was an elected alderman of the 1st Ward of the Medford City Council in 1953, and again in 1955. As a part of the Medford City Planning Board, he served from 1971 to 1995, and was also a charter member of the Medford Swimming Pool, established in 1955, and was a member of the Medford Curling Club. He also served as a board member of many different committees, including the Medford United Givers Fund, Memorial Hospital of Taylor County, Sunburst Youth Homes, Inc., and Kiwanis Club. He also served as an elected Director of Wisconsin Savings and Loan League, the United States League of Savings Association, and the Medford Chamber of Commerce.

 

Bill and Ursula were longtime members of United Church of Christ where he was elected to church council in 1975, and then elected President for two terms in 1976.

 

Bill will be missed by his wife of 68 years, Ursula; his children: Jini Mortensen; Laura (Tom) Rohlfs-Wood; Craig (Maggie); his daughter-in-law Christine (Paul) Scharrschmidt; his grandchildren: Erik (Nicki); Amy (Pete) Wade; Kirstin (Chad) Magnuson; Katrinna Scharrschmidt; Derek (Stephany), Jason (Colleen), Michael (Crystal), and Jeffrey (Lisa) Rohlfs; and Jedidiah Scharrschmidt; as well as 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul in 1999; and his siblings: Ewald; Adelia (George) Brunner; and Helen (Arthur) Moore.

 

A memorial service for Bill will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Community United Church of Christ, 510 E. Broadway Ave., Medford, WI, Rev. Ken Dix officiating. A visitation will be held at church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bill’s name.

Betty June Bohnert


 

Betty June Bohnert, 87, of Middlebury, died at 9:08 pm, on Saturday, April 26,
2014 at Greencroft Health Care, Goshen.

 

  She was born on June 24, 1926, in Marshfield, WI, to William F. and Vervia (Smith)

Roeber. She graduated in 1944 from Medford High School. On November 29, 1947 in

Medford, WI she married Raymond R. Bohnert; he died June 28, 1998.

 

  Surviving are two daughters, Kristin (Phil) Tice of Shipshewana and Jayne (Harris)

Helgeson of Woodinville, WA; a son, Randall (Suzanne) Bohnert of Arlington, VA; six

grandchildren, two great-grandsons, two step-grandsons, five step-great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two
brothers.

 

  Betty was a homemaker and she and her husband were former co-owners of WIGM

radio station in Medford.

 

  She was a lifetime member of Community United Church of Christ in Medford.

 

   A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday April 29, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Middlebury. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ron Russell.
Burial will be in Medford Evergreen Cemetery II, Medford WI. Memorials may
be given to the Elkhart County Food Bank. 

Muriel May Gaddis


Muriel May Gaddis, age 81, of Withee, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Withee. Family and friends are welcome from 10:00 AM until time of services on Saturday, May 3.

 

Muriel was born on May 25, 1932 in Curlew, Iowa the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Ward) Johnson. She graduated from Curlew High School. Muriel was united in marriage to Arthur E. Gaddis on March 4, 1951 in Curlew, Iowa. She was active on the farm in rural Withee and worked as a physical therapist assistant at the hospital in Stanley for many years.

 

Muriel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Withee and was active in the National Ayrshire Cattle Association. She also enjoyed her Thursday Coffee with her friends in Withee.

 

Muriel is survived by her husband, Arthur Gaddis; two sons: David Gaddis of Withee and Kevin (Melanie) Gaddis of Neillsville; two grandchildren: Ryan (Nancy) Gaddis of Christie and Dustin Gaddis of Eau Claire; one great-grandson, Erich Gaddis.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Helen.

Dorothy E. Shattuck


 

Dorothy E. Shattuck, age 91, of Owen, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Clark County Health Care Center. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Curtiss Alliance Church. Pastor Carl Swarr will officiate. Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Town of Hixon. Family and friends are welcome from 9:00 AM until time of service Wednesday at the church.

 

Dorothy was born on November 4, 1922, the daughter of Ralph and Hazel (Lott) Vickers in Rockwell, Iowa. She attended grade school at the Pine Creek School in Holoway and graduated from Owen High School in 1940. On November 10, 1940, Dorothy was united in marriage to George Shattuck in Maplehurst. Together, they farmed in the town of Longwood, moved to Rockford, IL for 9 months and then moved back to a farm in the Town of Hoard.

 

On the farm, she was a hard worker and took care of the milking. Dorothy was a very loving mom, grandma and friend. She liked to entertain and provided wonderful meals for all her family and guests. Dorothy tended her beautiful flower gardens was very artistic. Several of her paintings are displayed in the area. She was a member of Curtiss Alliance Church and Eastern Star.

 

Dorothy is lovingly survived by her three sons: Roger (Sue) of Medford, Lynn (Joyce) of Owen and Dale (Cindy) of Edmond, OK; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Hazel; her husband, George on August 1, 2010 and two brothers: Lloyd and Robert Vickers.

While farming, he also worked as a truck driver for the Eggert Company, worked at the Medford Co-op Creamery, owned/operated school busses for the Rib Lake School District, sold & installed Berg barn equipment and owned/operated a gravel & excavating business. He also served as Supervisor & Chairman for the Township of Greenwood. He enjoyed playing cards, camping and spending time with family & friends.

 

MEMBER OF: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Town of Greenwood where he also served on the cemetery board and was President & Treasurer on the church council for periods of time.

Betty Lou Hinz


 

Betty Lou Hinz, 53 of Black River Falls, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Black River Memorial Hospital in Black River Falls. A memorial service will be held at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford, on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held on
Saturday at the Funeral Home from 10:00 AM till the time of service.

Betty was born on July 16, 1960 to Clarence and Lillian (Sundermeyer) Hinz in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She received her early education in Luverne, Iowa, before moving to Abbotsford, where she was a 1979 graduate of Abbotsford High School. After high school she worked at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield in the kitchen and the laundry departments.

 

Betty married Peter Newmann and they were blessed with four children, they later divorced. She loved to be a homemaker and helping at various restaurants. Betty enjoyed karaoke, horse riding, gardening, tending her flowers and jigsaw puzzles.

SIGFRID E. "SIG" BORGESON, age 90, of Withee, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 13, 2014. A graveside service will be held at 12:30pm on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery in Withee, with Rev. Tom Myhre officiating. There will be a visitation held at Thorp Funeral Home, on Thursday, from 10am until noon.

 

  Sigfrid Eskil Borgeson was born on June 24, 1923 in the Town of Hixon, rural Withee, WI, the son on Rudolph and Jenny (Borgeson) Borgeson. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in the Withee area, graduating from Withee High School in 1941. After completing his education, Sig purchased a milk route in 1945, which he operated for 40 years, and in 1946, took over the operation of his family farm. After selling his milk route, he continued to drive for the new owner for several years. After retiring from driving completely, he held various jobs, but mainly worked as a janitor for the Midelfort Clinic in Chippewa Falls for 20 years. He was never an idle man, always working and puttering with something. In his later years, Sig was an avid reader.
 

  He will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years, Yvonne, of Withee; two children: Sidney (Marilyn) Borgeson of Withee; Jacalyn (Tom) Reinke of Withee; four grandchildren: Mathew Borgeson, Corrie (Matt) Bottlemy, Eric (Jenny) Borgeson, David (Samantha) Borgeson; three great grandchildren: Darryn and Grayce Bottlemy, and Morgen Borgeson; one sister: Elsie (Bill) Johnson of Minneapolis, MN; one brother: Raymond (Fay) Borgeson of Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work and traveling. Jerome also enjoyed watching the Packers, the Brewers, Lawrence Welk and westerns.

They moved to the Medford area where Dean worked at the Hedlund Agency from 2000 to 2007. In high school Dean enjoyed participating in football, basketball, baseball, and track. His passion for sports continued into adulthood. Dean enjoyed coaching his sons and other youth; he received the Marshfield Youth Baseball Coach of the Year Award. Dean often cheered on the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers. He enjoyed sailing at the Apostle Islands and was an avid downhill skier and outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Facing the challenges of Huntington’s Disease, Dean and his family worked to raise awareness in hopes of one day finding a cure.

After their marriage, the Hamanns farmed in the Town of Medford from 1946-1977 when they sold all but four acres of their farm on which they built a new home. Dorothy worked for Black Bear Inn and in the bakery at Holiday Village, retiring in 1980. She enjoyed bowling, crafts, quilting, crocheting, gardening and shopping.

Mathilda A. Stendel, 93, of Menomonie, formerly of Jump River, died
Thursday, April 3, 2014 at her daughter’s home under the care of Mayo
Clinic-Hospice.

 

  She was born on January 31, 1921 in Jump River, the
daughter of Martin and Anna (Vagts) Meyer. She attended Pioneer
Elementary and Hannibal High School. Tillie continued her education at
the Taylor County Teacher’s College and later received a Bachelor’s
Degree from U-W Eau Claire, going on to a career in teaching at the
Gilman School District.

 

  Tillie was united in marriage to Gerald “Fritz” Stendel in 1947 and they

farmed in the Jump River area until retirement.

 

  Mathilda was an active member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church,
Ladies Auxiliary, VFW and Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed
reading, playing cards, visiting with friends and family, and traveling.
   

   Mathilda is survived by her daughter, Nancy Herrick of Menomonie and
Fred (Karen) Stendel of Jump River, 5 grandchildren, Jamie (Nikki) Herrick
, Patrick (Heather) Herrick, Scott Herrick, Eric (Dawn) Stendel and Erin
(Joseph) Hattamer, 6 great-grandchildren, Michael & Christian Herrick,
Mia, Chelsea & Ali Herrick, and Amelia Hattamer. She is preceded in death
by her parents, husband, Gerald “Fritz”, brothers, Claus & Henry, sisters,
Dora Kochevar and Marie Gordon.
 

    A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 11 a.m.
at the New Hope Presbyterian Church, Hannibal, with Pastor Barry Boyer
officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Mount Nebo
Cemetery, Jump River. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at
the church. Plombon Funeral Service is assisting the family with
arrangements.

PRINCIPAL EVENTS IN LIFE: After her first marriage, they moved to Marshfield where she worked at Figi’s Cheese and the Marshfield Hospital for periods of time. Moved to the Town of Rib Lake and worked at the Rib Lake Nursing Home and Marathon Cheese until her retirement. They also operated Country View Bar in the Town of Rib Lake for a period of time. She enjoyed bowling, softball, gardening, flowers, mowing lawn, cards and her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Lloyd A. Duranceau


Lloyd A. Duranceau, age 78, of Owen, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield surrounded by his family. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee. The Rev. Bonnie Cain will officiate. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Owen-Withee American Legion Post #123. Family and friends are welcome on Monday, April 7 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen and on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church.

 

Lloyd was born September 6, 1935, the son of Ralph and Elsa (Hassle) Duranceau in Merrill. He attended school in Merrill and enlisted in the Navy in June of 1955. Lloyd served in Korea as a flight mechanic. He was honorably discharged due to a hardship in the family in August of 1957 to help out on the family farm in Merrill. On April 28, 1958, Lloyd was united in marriage to Carol Fry in Center City, MN. The continued out west to Cutbank, MT where he worked as a foreman on John Quist ranch. In 1959, the couple moved back to the farm in Merrill. He also worked at Rock of Ages quarry in Wausau, taught welding and was a supervisor at Conseco in Medford, worked at Wrightway Mfg. in Owen. Lloyd started his own company, “Duranceau and Sons Trucking” where he retired due to medical reasons. He then became a driver for the Amish and Mennonites.

 

Lloyd was an avid sportsmen and outdoorsmen and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and helping the family with making maple syrup. He also loved to watch sports, attend flea markets, played cards, including sheep head and cribbage and shooting pool. Lloyd especially loved giving rides to his great-grandchildren on his motorized wheelchair.

 

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol; seven children: Andy (Earlene) Duranceau of MN, Cindy (Greg) Bartnik of New London, Jeff (Bernice) Duranceau of Fon du Lac, Annette (Doug) Blunt of Colby, Brian Duranceau (Paula Huber) of Necedah, Lynne (Joseph) Larson of Wausau and Tori (Aaron) Knutson-Granec of San Angelo, TX; 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by five siblings: Marilyn Kufahl of Merrill, Fern Clausen of Merrill, Eloise Schultz of Montello, Goldy (Jack) Broen of Merrill and Loren (Aracely) Duranceau of Merrill; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Alfred Duranceau, Vivian Duranceau, Darryl Duranceau, Ellen Schultz, Arlene Kunke, Iris Claussen and Jean Duranceau.
